How to Get Ready for Ski Season in Summit County

 

It's that time of year again! The leaves are changing color, the air is getting crisp, and the snow will soon be starting to fall. That can only mean one thing: ski season is just around the corner! Here in Summit County, Colorado, we're already getting excited for another season on the slopes. After all, with six world-class ski resorts right in our backyard, there's no better place to hit the powder than here. 

But before you can start enjoying all that our beautiful county has to offer, there are a few things you need to do to get ready for ski season. From stocking up on supplies to making sure your vehicle is winterized, here's everything you need to do to prepare for a fun-filled season on the mountain.

6-8 Weeks Before Ski Season

Stock Up on Supplies

No matter how experienced of a skier or snowboarder you are, there's always going to be a few basic items that you need before hitting the slopes. This includes things like sunscreen, lip balm, goggles, gloves, and a hat. Be sure to pack extras of each of these items in case you lose them on the mountain or someone else in your group needs them. 

Get Your Equipment in Order

Get your equipment in order. Make sure your skis are tuned and your bindings are adjusted properly. If you're renting equipment, be sure to get it early so you have time to get used to it.

Get in Shape 

Skiing is a physically demanding sport, so it's important to be in good physical condition before hitting the slopes. Take some time to build up your endurance and strength by doing some cardiovascular and strength-training exercises.

Get Your Vehicle Ready for Winter Driving 

If you'll be driving up to the mountain yourself, it's important to make sure your vehicle is properly winterized before hitting the road. This includes things like making sure your tires have enough tread and are properly inflated, as well as getting your battery and brakes checked. You should also keep an emergency kit in your car in case you get stranded in bad weather. This kit should include things like jumper cables, flares, a first-aid kit, and blankets. 

Plan Your Trip and Make Accommodations 

Once you've taken care of all the logistics, it's time to start planning your trip! If you're coming from out of town, be sure to book your lodging well in advance. Ski season is one of the busiest times of year in Summit County so accommodations fill up fast! Once you've secured your lodging, start planning out which resorts you want to visit and which trails you want to ski or ride. 

Ski Pass

Last but not least, don't forget your ski pass! Whether you're planning on buying a single-day pass or a season pass, be sure to have it with you when you head up to the mountain. Nothing puts a damper on a day of skiing quite like realizing you left your pass at home.

Tips for a Great Day on the Slopes! 

Learn the Basics 

If you're new to skiing, or if it's been awhile since you've been on the slopes, brush up on the basics. Take a lesson or two from a professional instructor to learn proper technique.

Stay hydrated and well-nourished 

Skiing can be taxing on your body, so it's important to stay hydrated and well-nourished while you're on the slopes. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy snacks and meals to keep your energy levels up.

Pace yourself

Don't try to do too much too soon when you're first getting back into skiing. Start with shorter runs and gradually build up to longer ones as you become more comfortable on your skis.
